Teguise, the capital of Lanzarote up to 1852, has become
one of the most important cultural centres on the island.
Its streets with palaces, convents and squares preserve
the unmistakable flavour of the past centuries and narrate
a thousand and one stories. Skirmishes between Moors and
Christians and filibuster attacks, among other events, marked
the history of this splendid town.
Teguise offers its visitors the opportunity to shop for
gifts in several bazaars. An open market that is held every
Sunday in the streets of Teguise and squares of the village
gathers together the typical craftsmen of the islands protected
customs and traditions.
In the 1980s Teguise was declared an architectural historic-artistic
centre as one of the oldest and most beautiful villages
in the Canaries and is considered by both locals and visitors
a living museum.
